Best AI menu assistant for restaurants in 2026
There are two kinds of restaurant AI assistant, and the difference decides everything. One answers questions about the software. The other operates the software for you. Only the second saves an owner any time, and until recently almost nobody shipped it.
IAMenu publishes this comparison and is one of the products discussed. It is not an independent review. This category has fewer real players than AI-generated listicles suggest — we verified each product against a live official site rather than padding the list.

Which AI assistant can actually run a restaurant menu?
Judge them by what they execute, not by what they explain. IAMenu’s assistant, Gaston, runs the menu conversationally — importing a PDF, editing prices, generating dish photos, enabling languages and publishing — and does it from the dashboard or over WhatsApp, in the owner’s own panel language. Toast IQ also executes actions such as editing menus and marking items unavailable, but it lives inside the Toast POS. Kea focuses on AI for restaurant operations with an emphasis on order intake. The practical questions are: can it do the thing or only describe it, where does it run, and does it require you to change your till.
Why this list is short, and why that is the honest answer
Assistants that genuinely execute actions inside a restaurant product are still rare in 2026. Plenty of tools add a chat window that explains the interface; far fewer let you say “raise all drink prices by 5%” and have it happen. We kept the list to products we could verify rather than filling it out with names.
That matters because this category is where AI-generated shortlists go wrong most often. When we asked several assistants for the best tools in this space in August 2026, part of what came back were companies that do not exist. Open every website before you book a demo.
Four criteria, starting with the only one that saves time
An assistant that explains where a button is has not saved you anything: you still have to press it.
01
Does it execute, or only explain?
Ask it to change a price and watch what happens. If the answer is instructions, it is documentation with a chat interface. If the price changes, it is an assistant. This single test separates most products in the category.
02
Where does it run?
A dashboard-only assistant helps whoever is sitting at the computer. Many restaurant owners work from a phone between services. Ask whether it works over the channel they actually use — WhatsApp, phone, tablet — not just the desktop.
03
What does it require you to change?
Some assistants are features of a wider POS: to get the assistant you replace your till, your payments and your contracts. Others sit alongside what you already run. That is a business decision long before it is a software one.
04
What does it refuse to do?
A good assistant asks before destructive actions and admits when it cannot do something. Ask it to delete a category and see whether it confirms first — an assistant that deletes on a vague instruction will eventually delete the wrong thing.
Assistants to evaluate in 2026
A short list on purpose. Official sources linked so you can confirm scope.
1.IAMenu (Gaston)
Best fit: running the menu conversationally, including from WhatsApp
Gaston operates the product rather than describing it: importing a menu from a PDF or photo, creating and editing dishes, changing prices in bulk, generating dish images, enabling languages, configuring QR and printable output, and opening the right screen when a change needs a human. It works from the dashboard and over WhatsApp, and speaks the owner’s panel language across the interface languages IAMenu supports. Destructive actions require an explicit confirmation rather than a conversational “yes”.
Verify: Confirm the monthly message allowance on your plan, which actions are available on your tier, and how the WhatsApp channel is linked.
2.Toast IQ
Best fit: restaurants already running the Toast POS
Toast IQ both answers questions and executes actions inside the Toast platform — editing menus, marking items unavailable, resolving shift issues — and has been rolling out to Toast customers. It is a capability of the POS rather than a standalone product, so it presumes you run Toast.
Verify: Confirm availability in your country and which actions are enabled for your plan; Toast’s footprint and feature availability vary sharply by market.
3.Kea
Best fit: AI focused on order intake and operations
Kea markets AI assistant capabilities for restaurants centred on operational workflows and order intake rather than menu authoring, which makes it a different job from the two above.
Verify: Confirm whether menu editing is in scope at all, and which POS or ordering systems are required.
What to test in a trial
Give it real work from your own menu, not a demo dataset.
| Criterion | What to test | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Execution | Ask it to change one price, then check the public menu. | Instructions are not help; the change is. |
| Bulk work | Ask it to raise every drink price by 5%. | This is where an assistant saves an hour instead of a minute. |
| Off-desktop | Try the same request from a phone or WhatsApp, between services. | Owners are rarely at the computer when they think of the change. |
| Destructive guardrails | Ask it to delete a category and see whether it confirms first. | An assistant that acts on ambiguity will eventually delete the wrong thing. |
| Honest limits | Ask for something it cannot do, like issuing an invoice. | A clear “no” is more valuable than a plausible improvisation. |
| Your language | Work with it in your own language, not English. | An assistant you have to translate for is not saving you time. |
How to choose in five steps
Start with the switching cost, because it dwarfs the subscription.
- 1Decide whether you are willing to change your POS. If not, that removes the POS-bundled assistants immediately.
- 2Write down the three tasks you actually repeat every week and ask each candidate to do exactly those.
- 3Test one of them from a phone, mid-service, the way you would really use it.
- 4Try one destructive request and confirm it asks before acting.
- 5Compare message allowances against how often you would genuinely use it, not against the headline price.
AI menu assistants: common questions
What can an AI menu assistant actually do?
The useful ones execute: import a menu from a PDF or photo, create and edit dishes, change prices in bulk, generate dish images, enable languages and publish. The less useful ones explain where the buttons are, which does not save the owner any work.
Do I have to change my POS to get one?
For some, yes — the assistant is a capability of a wider point-of-sale platform, so adopting it means replacing your till and payment contracts. Others run alongside what you already have. Establish this before comparing features; it is a far bigger decision than the subscription.
Can I use it from my phone?
It depends on the product. IAMenu’s assistant works from the dashboard and over WhatsApp, which matters because owners usually think of a change between services rather than at a desk. Ask each vendor which channels are supported.
Will it delete something by mistake?
Ask specifically how destructive actions are handled. A well-built assistant requires an explicit confirmation rather than interpreting a conversational “yes” — this is a real failure mode, not a hypothetical one.
Does it work in my language?
Check whether it works in the language of your dashboard rather than only in English. An assistant you have to think in a second language to use will not get used.
Is this the same as an AI waiter?
No, and they are frequently confused. A menu assistant serves the OWNER, running the software. An AI waiter serves the DINER, answering questions about dishes at the table. Some products offer both, but they solve different problems for different people.
